It was during the Renaissance period that gloves really began to take on very special and unique meanings. Use caution when handling your Ines gloves, as you never know when history can repeat itself!

Handing a glove to a specific person labeled that person as an enemy. The next step involved throwing that glove under the feet of the enemy. Let the duel begin!

Receiving a glove from a lady had a very different meaning...

The giving of a woman's glove to a male suitor was a symbol of great love and reverence. As a token of his esteem, the recipient would proudly wear this cherished glove around his neck in a special bag.

Movie night with gloves galore!

To all my Friends of Elegance and fellow leather glove enthusiasts, I invite you all to curl up on the sofa with some popcorn and indulge in one of my favorite movies Down with love (2003), starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor. This is no ordinary chick flick!

Down with love gives a stylish portrayal of a young woman who comes to New York with stars in her eyes and big dreams in her heart, only to find a male-dominated workplace. Not to worry though... the very resourceful Barbara Novak (Zellweger) soon writes her way to the very top of the bestseller list, catching the eye of the most famous journalist and eligible bachelor along the way!

Apart from a very cute storyline, this movie features a wide variety of gloves, including shoulder-high and glace gloves. Enjoy the show!

Love & The Glove

Over the years, gloves have been used for much more than a fashion accessory; gloves can express emotions... love, power, desire, anger... through the use of color, texture, gesture, and behavior.
The following is an excerpt from Friedrich Schiller's poem The Glove, which describes the lengths a man would go through to show his love for a woman... even if it means saving a glove from dangerous animals. I would do the same... especially if it's an Ines Glove!

From the balcony raised high above

A fair hand lets fall down a glove

Into the lists, where 'tis seen

The lion and tiger between.

To the knight, Sir Delorges, in tone of jest,

Then speaks young Cunigund fair;

"Sir Knight, if the love that thou feel'st in thy breast

Is as warm as thou'rt wont at each moment to swear,

Pick up, I pray thee, the glove that lies there!"

And the knight, in a moment, with dauntless tread,

Jumps into the lists, nor seeks to linger,

And, from out the midst of those monsters dread,

Picks up the glove with a daring finger.

Glove love

It may surprise you to learn that gloves aren't just for wearing... gloves speak volumes! The appearance, texture, and style of your glove speaks to your personality, personal style, and even your mood. Beyond that, a mere flick of the wrist or a slight or gentle tap of the finger can spell romance or rejection... you decide!

Here are a few glovey interpretations that have been used throughout history to seduce and summon. Try them out for yourself!

- holding the tips of your gloves downward: I wish to be acquainted.
- gently smoothing your gloves: I wish I were with you; I wish to speak with you.
- holding gloves loosely in your right hand: Be content.
- holding gloves loosely in your left hand: I am satisfied.
- striking gloves over your hand: I am displeased.
- tossing gloves up gently: I am engaged.
- tapping your gloves against your chin: I love another.
- dropping your glove: Yes
- dropping both gloves: I love you.
- turning the wrong side of your gloves outward: I dislike you.
