Love & The Glove

Over the years, gloves have been used for much more than a fashion accessory; gloves can express emotions... love, power, desire, anger... through the use of color, texture, gesture, and behavior.
The following is an excerpt from Friedrich Schiller's poem The Glove, which describes the lengths a man would go through to show his love for a woman... even if it means saving a glove from dangerous animals. I would do the same... especially if it's an Ines Glove!

From the balcony raised high above
A fair hand lets fall down a glove
Into the lists, where 'tis seen
The lion and tiger between.

To the knight, Sir Delorges, in tone of jest,
Then speaks young Cunigund fair;
"Sir Knight, if the love that thou feel'st in thy breast
Is as warm as thou'rt wont at each moment to swear,
Pick up, I pray thee, the glove that lies there!"

And the knight, in a moment, with dauntless tread,
Jumps into the lists, nor seeks to linger,
And, from out the midst of those monsters dread,
Picks up the glove with a daring finger.

The etiquette of shoulder-high leather gloves

Indulging, shoulder-high leather gloves are hot on the runway this season! Even celebrities are wearing long leather gloves throughout the year, and not just as an accessory during an awards show. Long leather gloves are an amazingly elegant addition to a strapless or sleeveless dress, and are available in a wide array of colors. Before you slip into a pair, take a peek at the rules of etiquette to avoid any style slip-ups!

- gloves are initially put on carefully in the privacy of the home.

- gloves need not be removing when shaking hands, in a receiving line, or when dancing.

- though gloves may be worn while drinking, avoid spilling liquids and ruining the soft leather. Even partially removing the gloves is recommended to avoid a catastrophe!

- gloves are removed while eating dinner, but can be replaced immediately after.

- when removing gloves, do not draw attention to yourself in an undue or seductive manner... unless that's your intention! Long gloves are very sensual, and removing them makes for a very tempting, seductive act!

- glove length: the shorter the sleeve, the longer the glove. Shoulder-high leather gloves are idelly worn with a sleeveless, sexy, little black dress or evening gown.

- black gloves should not be worn with light-colored clothes... black works best with dark, black, or bright colors.

- when gloves are initially put on, the hand should be worked in from the wrist. The glove is then gradually smoothed up the arm, rather than pulled from the top.

Think outside the glove

Whoever said that gloves were meant to be worn on the hands were obviously not at Milan Fashion Week!

The Fall 2009 collection from Dolce & Gabbana was extraordinary, defying normal conventions and introducing new ways of wearing ordinary accessories!

Imagine a cool autumn day... you're just about to head out to run some errands, so you decide to show off your new Dolce & Gabbana belted trenchcoat, but you realize that you need a scarf to complete your outfit. Well, you could go for the mundane, traditional wool scarf... or you could go for the "glovey" look: wrap a pair of long leather gloves loosely around your neck! If you're feeling adventurous and want to get noticed, try this look with a pair of My petite cashmere-lined gloves.

Want a new and interesting way to show off your glove collection during the spring and summer months? Wear your gloves on your head! It may sound bizarre, but the look is still very elegant and unique. For those who may not be ready to sport leather gloves in new places, black leggings with leather accents remain unique, and still show off your adventurous side! For a hat glove, I would recommend My short everyday glace gloves, which are available in a variety of elegant colors.

Celebs love driving gloves!

Though the beautiful summer weather is just around the corner, your faithful gloves need not be retired to your closet shelf until autumn! Some of the most popular glovey styles are those that can be worn year-round for function, fashion, and style...

Our favorite Material Girl is venturing out in glovey style with a pair of glossy fingerless driving gloves to show off her well-known fashionista side. If you're not a fan of the fingerless, try a pair of glossy big button driving gloves, complete with a unique button clasp and patent leather snake print.

Pistols at dawn?

Prior to being worn strictly for fashion and comfort, gloves were being used throughout history to represent a symbol of power, to extend a challenge in combat, or to offer the gift of friendship.Share/Bookmark

A royal touch of Grace

Grace Kelly (1929 - 1982) was reknowned as a brilliant actress of the 1950s, starring in such films as To Catch a Thief, High Society, and The Country Girl, which lead her to an academy award for best actress.

In 1956, the elegance and grace so beautifully demonstrated on the big screen followed Grace down the aisle as she married a real-life Prince Charming, Prince Rainier III, becoming Princess Grace of Monaco.

Princess Grace looked absolutely stunning when she accepted her Oscar... almost-elbow high gloves add a touch of noblesse and charm to the wearer. Long leather gloves can be worn with sleeveless tops or dresses, and can be bunched along the arm for a hint of character. Once the warm summer season passes, try pairing long gloves with a 3/4-sleeved jacket or blouse.

Long gloves are also not limited to black or white... red, brown, yellow, fuschia, and gray are just some of the colors that can be used to accent the wardrobe. Check out the entire collection at Ines Gloves!Share/Bookmark

Men's leather on the rise at Milan Fashion Week 2009

It used to be that men and leather was confined to a pair of black or brown glace gloves for the winter and a simple leather belt for daily use. Now, men's leather is on the rise, and is attempting to steer men away from the mundane leather accessories and sport more leather jackets, coats, and pants. Leather wear is also being promoted more in the movies... copies of Tom Cruise's leather hero jacket from his blockbuster film War of the Worlds were in high demand, not only because the actor wore it so well, but also because leather jackets are functional, very sexy, and can be worn on literally any occasion.

Men's leather fashions were out in full force at this year's fashion week in Milan. Though very versatile, leather must be worn correctly in order to exude confidence, style, and sophistication. For example, tight leather clothing is a no-no, as is dressing from head-to-toe in leather (unless you're planning to hop on a motorcycle!). A few key leather pieces added to your wardrobe can go a long way...

If you're new to the leather scene, start off small... Armani put together a fantastically functional fall/winter look, pairing a warm, voluptuous coat with a pair of black glace gloves: functional, yet incredibly sexy!

Leather hats are making a comeback this season as well. Fedoras are becoming increasingly popular among the guys, being worn with a trenchcoat or even as a complement to smart business attire. A more casual look can be accented by a flat leather cap, worn with pants, a sweater, and scarf... don't forget your gloves on those chilly days!

Many designers, such as Dolce and Gabbana (above) chose to feature a motorcycle-style leather jacket, pairing it with casual pants or jeans and a turtleneck. A jacket of this type could also work with dress pants and a monochromatic shirt and tie, perhaps for that early office meeting or an evening with someone special. No matter what the occasion, leather fits perfectly!

Perhaps the most versatile piece of leather clothing is the trenchcoat... Versace's fabulous double-breasted coat can be worn over professional business attire or toned down with pants and a turtleneck for a casual look.
Dark colors look best on men... though black is the most popular color, pieces in blue or brown can still be used to make the ultimate fashion statement. Men have been using leather for decades, as wallets, belts, briefcases, and shoes, so leather fashion is not necessarily foreign territory. However, it's time for our guys to branch out, try something new, and don some leather clothing... make a strong, stylish, elegant statement!

Sacrificing circulation for fashion

The Victorian era (1837 - 1901) is known for its feeling of prudishness, reservation, and unique culture. Women traditionally wore tight corsets, puffy sleeves, and elaborate crinolines beneath their dresses. For men, stove-pipe pants and a smart cravat were all the rage. However, both men and women were never without their gloves... whether it was time for tea, church, or just a social call, gloves were a necessity. To accommodate the feeling of the time, gloves were actually worn so tightly that it would often take upwards of 20 minutes to don a single glove!Share/Bookmark

Todd Lynn launched his much-anticipated eponymous collection in London to press and buyers in September, 2006. His collection embodies the easy, dark, and beautiful rock n' roll cool that his music industry heavy-hitters have long appreciated. This combination of fur and shoulder-high leather gloves is perfect rock n' roll chic! This makes for a very classic look with a touch of edginess! Functional, yet fabulous!

Dressing from head-to-toe in leather is an ideal way to really indulge your senses! The scent and soft feel of the leather instills confidence, exudes elegance, and appeals to every eye... the leather look can be toned down with a sexy suit jacket or accented with a pair of colored leather gloves. Try a pair of scoop half gloves in My fire!

I love the look of a long leather jacket... very classy and ultimately sexy and slimming for a very sleek look. If you really want to show off your leather gloves, a pair of almost elbow high gauntlet gloves can be worn over the jacket.

Leather pants are a must-have for any leather enthusiast! Very sexy, and can really be worn in any season... pants paired with past elbow gloves is great for a spring day. Show a little skin, with a touch of elegance.

Black is cetainly not the only color for leather! White leather gives off a lot of charm and appeal, making for the ultimate get-noticed, classy look... white is also very easy to complement with colored glace gloves - my fire, my sweets, or even my candy!

A little too long in the glove

The reign of Queen Elizabeth I marked a time when gloves were first becoming popular for women in England. Unfortunately for the glove enthusiast, gloves were often manufactured 11 inches longer than necessary! Glove wearers would then stuff the extra length with paper... great for a secret storage place!Share/Bookmark
