Gloves throughout history: when in Rome...
Gloves were worn during dinner in Ancient Rome. Known as digitalia, they were used mainly to protect the hands when reaching for hot meat.
Yes... food was grabbed with the hands, as there were no forks or other such utensils.
You can simulate Roman digitalia using Ines' my bling only fingers leather gloves! Though slightly longer than the Roman version, these unique gloves offer a contemporary take on eating... Roman-style!

Glove love in the movies...
To all my Friends of Elegance and fellow leather glove lovers, I invite you all to curl up on the sofa with some popcorn and indulge in one of my favorite movies Down with love (2003), starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor. This is no ordinary chick flick!
Down with Love gives a stylish portrayal of a young woman who comes to New York with stars in her eyes and big dreams in her heart, only to find a male-dominated workplace. Not to worry though... the very resourceful Barbara Novak (Zellweger) soon writes her way to the very top of the bestseller list, catching the eye of the most famous journalist and eligible bachelor along the way!
Apart from a very cute storyline, this movie features a wide variety of gloves, including my sensual shoulder-high gloves and short every day glace gloves. Very reminiscent of the early 1950s, when leather gloves were still very much a part of a woman's daily wardrobe.

Ines Gloves in the 20th century
In the Golden Age of Hollywood glam, my sensual shoulder-high leather gloves were a staple on the big screen. Actresses of the 1950s wouldn't be caught in public without their favorite pair of gloves.
Audrey Hepburn is known for her preference of my sensual almost elbow-high gloves, though she wore her iconic my sensual past elbow gloves in the 1961 classic Breakfast at Tiffany's...

The Golden Age of my sensual shoulder-high gloves
As my sensual shoulder-high leather gloves enter the Golden age of fashion, let us begin with a piece of historical trivia...
Shoulder-high gloves are typically between 19 and 23 inches in length, and will often include a small wrist opening that closes with buttons or a simple snap. Gloves would be either black, white, or ivory, and made from soft kidskin leather. Such gloves were known as "mousquetaires" in France! As it turns out, long leather gloves in the 17th century were originally designed for use by French musketeers. When these leather gloves first came into design, they were made in singles (or half-pairs) specifically for use in dueling and were designed to fit over a man's sleeve.
However, a design of gloves for women commanded a more feminine elegance and grace... mousquetaires were made longer (shoulder-high) and designed with the same refinement as those of Ines Gloves. The longest mousquetaires in history were made even longer so that the could wrinkle attractively when worn. This can be done with Ines' long gloves... try out these unique 17th century fashions!

Prior to 1870, every day glace gloves were worn, as the sleeves of Victorian dresses in this era were typically full-length. Elbow-length sleeves (or perhaps even shorter) were worn in the evening. As such, the shoulder-high leather gloves made a grand appearance!
The wrinkled wear of mousequetaires is perhaps best shown by famed actress Sarah Bernhardt, who wore them in 1870 for one of her roles:
From here, the popularity of shoulder-high leather gloves exploded, with every woman wanting a pair of these fantastic gloves. These gloves made a huge impact on theatre audiences as well. Actress Lillian Russell, a popular American actress, was known for her extensive glove collection, with shoulder-high gloves often being her glove of choice for photographs:
In the Victoria era, it was considered absolutely essential for women to constantly wear their gloves, regardless of whether they're eating, drinking, socializing, or shaking hands. Gloves were this area were skintight... literally worn as a second skin. In fact, women often required assistance to remove their gloves! It was considered by many to be inappropriate for a women to be seen donning a pair of shoulder-high gloves in public - it would attract too much attention.
To get past this social problem, women would wear gloves with small wrist openings designed to fit their hand through when eating or drinking to avoid soiling their gloves. Clever!

My sensual shoulder high leather gloves continue to represent the elegance and high class of the Edwardian period. In fact, gloves were worn whenever possible: to weddings, funerals, dinner parties, garden parties. If there was an occasion, gloves made an appearance. This tradition survived well into the 20th century.

Origins of my sensual shoulder-high gloves
Believe it or not, gloves have been worn for upwards of three thousand years! Our very favorite (and very elegant) shoulder-high gloves appear to have appeared during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Queen Elizabeth I is known to have worn a pair of 18-inch long white leather gauntlet gloves with 2-inches of solid gold fringe at a ceremony in 1566. Coincidentally, my elbow high leather gauntlet gloves are available in present time for those of you who wish to try to simulate the royal gloves of the Queen.
A little over 100 years later, Queen Mary was painted wearing her own version of shoulder-high gloves...
My sensual shoulder high gloves first gained popularity as essential items of fashion around the era of Napolean I (late 1700s), but such gloves had already started to appear throughout Europe...
Speaking of Napolean, did you know that he himself was a glove wearer? As of 1806, Napolean was rumored to own about 240 pairs of gloves! He was a huge advocate of feminine fashion, and encouraged the Empress Josephine to always dress in the style of the times. As it turns out, however, the Empress was actually quite dissatisfied with her hands, and wore gloves to mask their "ugliness".
In the times of Napolean, gloves were surprisingly available in a wide variety of colors and were made from many different materials. Kidskin leather and cloth were quite popular - the particular glove style involved leaving the glove loose around the arm of the wearer so that they could be fashionably "scrunched" towards the wrist.
Sadly, in 1825, the popularity of my sensual shoulder high gloves would diminish, to make room for the long, fashionable sleeves of the early- and mid-Victorian periods. Even when women wore short sleeves, a short pair of every day glace gloves would be worn.

How to get your leather fix in the summer...
We've all been tempted to wear our favorite leather in the sweltering heat of the summer, but is it really hot-weather friendly? The quick answer is... absolutely!!
Leather weather
Many popular fashion designers have reinvented leather specifically for the summer season. Leather dyed in brilliant colors, cut to flatter the feminine shape, and made available in a variety of pieces are just a few ways that designers have made leather accessible for the summer.
The best way to extend the life of your leather wear is to wear classic pieces that make for an easy transition into autumn. High-waisted leather shorts, flowy blouses in bright colors, and leather skirts are a few pieces that have increased in leather popularity.
Two tips for summer leather weather
1. Wear the smallest dose of leather - leather is so sexy, but please keep in mind that you can only tolerate so much in the heat of summer. If you're spending the day in air conditioning, a leather blazer may not be so bad, but for a walk on the beach... not so much. Including simple leather accents as part of your ensemble goes a long way... leather headbands, shorts, perforated driving gloves, and shorter leather skirts are some simple suggestions to beat the heat while still indulging in leather.

Keep seasonal practicality in mind - I have a bad habit of buying delightful leather pants and jackets in the summer (when they're on sale), and it kills me to have to wait until cooler weather to wear them! Ines loves Marilyn Monroe...
~ the beautiful Monroe wearing my silk lined every day glace glovesAfter spending her early years living in foster homes, Marilyn began a career as a model, before quickly moving to the movies and starring in a series of films that lead to major appearances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (1950). She used her "dumb blonde" persona for comedic effect in many roles, but through it all, she would become one of America's greatest sex symbols.

Dining in dinner gloves...
In the Middle Ages, gloves were worn when eating... the catch is that these "dining gloves" weren't really gloves at all. Rather, diners wore small thimbles made from thin, high-quality fabric on each finger when eating!

Ines spotlight on Canadian designers - Matthew Gallagher
Young designer Matthew Gallagher originally caught my eye not because of his elegant collection of classic garments, but because we share the same hometown province of Nova Scotia, Canada!
It's not very often that a young person from a small province follows his dream to the fashion schools of Milan... and now Matthew has debuted his newest collection at Toronto Fashion Week fall 2013.
Matthew knew at an early age that he had an interest in fashion. He continues to sketch all of his ideas by hand, and has used the films of Alfred Hitchcock to inspire his newest collection. Clean, classic looks for chic women... and incredibly designed by this talented person in a single month!
Seamless sophistication is evident in this runway look... the long sleeves of this ensemble are ideal for a cute pair of my fashion scoop half gloves. Try them in my haze to keep with the idea of classic cinema or break away from tradition in a bright pair in my candy (fushcia)!
A timeless design to show a sleek silhouette... the elegance of Matthew's designs perfectly complements the elegance of Ines gloves. What is stretch leather??

The manufacture of stretch leather is based upon the layered structure of leather itself. Ines loves Toronto Fashion Week 2013!!
Summer may not yet be over, but the fashion runways of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, were filled with the sights, sounds, and (most importantly) smells of leather at Toronto Fashion Week 2013. The word is out... leather is in... with a vengeance!!! The beautiful fall collections featured leather wear reminiscent of Ines designs: elegance, sensuality, and beauty.
Models in long gloves!! Designer Kimberly Newport-Mimran, the mind behind label Pink Tartan, patterned her fall 2013 collection after the TV series American Horror Story. All models wore blonde wigs and appeared slightly deranged, much like the murderous character featured in the television series. Pink Tartan's collection is suited for an incredibly chic woman, complete with my sensual almost elbow-high gloves!
What a gorgeous leather dress! You can't see this, but this unique leather dress has a plunging V-back. And paired with almost elbow-high gloves??!! Stunning...
Montreal-based design team Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan (creative minds behind the Mackage label) were featured in a previous blog post. Well, they took Toronto Fashion Week by storm with a fabulous leather line-up. They proved that while basic black is classic, colored leather is just fun! Gloves very similar to my leather button driving gloves made a beautiful appearance as part of the very colorful outfit pictured above...
... while a return to basic black leather is never a bad thing. Leather skirt, sensual oh-la-la leg gloves, and my leather button driving gloves together create an ensemble that is classy, elegant, and very sexy!
Finally, we meet Canadian designer Sunny Fong and his unique label Vawk, displaying his Scandinavian-inspired collection Nordic Fauna. We love our men in leather, and Vawk gives us exactly what we're after: coats inspired by hunting gear and Scandinavian minimalism. The male model pictured above looks delightful in his leather gloves, very similar to my man bare knuckles elk gloves!
I was very happy to see that leather played such a large part of Toronto Fashion Week this year. It's classic, elegant, and will never go out of style, but these and other Canadian designers continue to show that leather is fun too... continue to express your elegance and indulge in your favorite Ines gloves.
Models in long gloves!! Designer Kimberly Newport-Mimran, the mind behind label Pink Tartan, patterned her fall 2013 collection after the TV series American Horror Story. All models wore blonde wigs and appeared slightly deranged, much like the murderous character featured in the television series. Pink Tartan's collection is suited for an incredibly chic woman, complete with my sensual almost elbow-high gloves!
What a gorgeous leather dress! You can't see this, but this unique leather dress has a plunging V-back. And paired with almost elbow-high gloves??!! Stunning...
Montreal-based design team Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan (creative minds behind the Mackage label) were featured in a previous blog post. Well, they took Toronto Fashion Week by storm with a fabulous leather line-up. They proved that while basic black is classic, colored leather is just fun! Gloves very similar to my leather button driving gloves made a beautiful appearance as part of the very colorful outfit pictured above...
... while a return to basic black leather is never a bad thing. Leather skirt, sensual oh-la-la leg gloves, and my leather button driving gloves together create an ensemble that is classy, elegant, and very sexy!
Finally, we meet Canadian designer Sunny Fong and his unique label Vawk, displaying his Scandinavian-inspired collection Nordic Fauna. We love our men in leather, and Vawk gives us exactly what we're after: coats inspired by hunting gear and Scandinavian minimalism. The male model pictured above looks delightful in his leather gloves, very similar to my man bare knuckles elk gloves!
